WFMW - Keeping Your Zipper Up

OK, I'm probably going to completely embarrass myself with this post, but as I've said before... at least I'm able to laugh at myself!

I have the unfortunate problem of owning pants with zippers that won't stay up. I don't know why this happens, but it happens to me a lot. My pants all fit properly, but if I bend over, or sit down... down goes the zipper. It drives me nuts! And, gives me a complex. I wonder.. does my stomach stick out in some weird way that my zippers just can't handle?! If so, I guess that's just one more reason to keep up with my diet.

Anyway, after years of suffering from XYZ syndrome, I've finally come up with a solution... tiny flat elastic hair bands. I just hook them around a hole in the zipper pull like this:
The other hole closer to the zipper works as well, and may be necessary because some pants don't have a hole on the end of the zipper pull like these do.

Then when the zipper is all the way up I hook the rest of the elastic around the button like this:
Once I button my pants closed you can't even see the elastic.
The cheap elastics that don't stretch much seem to work the best, and last longer. I've had this one (actually it's two together) on this pair of jeans for about a year. I even wash them with it on. If the elastic does stretch out on you, or fall off in the wash, don't worry they're cheap and can easily be replaced.

A word of caution.. it does take slightly longer to undo your pants, so don't wait till the last minute when you have to "go."

Please be honest with me... have I made a complete fool of myself sharing this little secret with you all? :) I guess it's OK if I have. At least I'm no longer showing my underwear to the world!

This works for me! Check out other great tips at this week's edition of Works For Me Wednesday.

Man, I've thrown away plenty of pants because my zipper wore out over time...

What a good idea!

I thought the rubber band was used to extend the width of the waist, lol!

That's a great idea! I have a fabulous pair of jeans I love, but the stupid zipper just won't stay up. You've now saved them from the Goodwill pile - lol! Thanks.

Great idea!! I've had this problem for so long! I use safety pins to pin the zipper to the part of the waistband covered by the button, but yours seems to be a much better idea.

I don't have a problem with my zippers falling down, but when I do, thank you for this great fix!

You did NOT make a fool of yourself ... today you're going to hear hundreds (okay, maybe just dozens) of times that you are GENIUS! This hardly ever happens to me, but just yesterday I was sitting in the food court of our local mall and realized, oops! Thanks for the tip!

I used to do this too, then someone told me that XYZ zippers are designed to stay up when... are you ready for this... you zip up the zipper, then face it downwards. Just push the part that you pull right against the zipper and it won't fall down. Sound too basic? That's it!! Honestly, once you've done it, push down on the top of it and it doesn't even budge. MAGIC!!

beautiful stranger -

I've heard of this before as well, but it does not work with my YKK zippers. They still just go right down!

I'm glad you've had better luck with yours. :)

Love it! I have some jeans that do the same thing, and I never remember until I have them on! ;-)

You have totally NOT made a fool of yourself, only given an answer to a question most women would never ask- thank you! I have a pair of pants that does this and I no longer have to shove them to the botom of the pile out of fear of showcasing my undies! Thanks!

I think it's great that you posted this. Even though I don't recognize the problem, I'm sure there are many people who do and are embarrassed about it. So good job!

I love this!! One of my favorite pairs of capris has a zipper that is constantly half way down, I'm so happy to have a solution! Genius!

I cannot tell you how much this is appreciated!! I have the same problem and have no idea why zippers won't stay up. I use a safety pin but they tear the fabric over time and ouch!! when they come undone. I will try this. Thanks a bunch!

thank you for the idea!!!

i have my little mommy pooch that sticks out awkwardly over my c-section scar and my pants were not workin' with me at all.

i modified it a little and used a keyring instead cause i didn't have any tiny rubberbands on hand.
