Menu Planning Monday - #1

Hello all, and thanks for stopping by my blog. This is my first time participating in Menu Planning Monday, but I hope to be back often. Our menus go from Friday through Thursday, because I do all of our grocery shopping on Fridays. I get a lot of recipes from the internet, and my husband and I also like to create our own recipes.

If I can link to the recipe I will, and all you have to do is click on the picture to be taken to the link. If I don't have a recipe, then I will do my best to describe how we cook the dish, and this information will be in the NOTES below the MENU. So, thanks again for stopping by, and I hope you're able to find some new dishes to try.

NOTES
Friday: Since I sort of borrowed this from Rachel Ray, all I can say is... YUM-O!

Saturday: This was our first time trying this recipe. It's creamier and less tomatoey than other Enchilada recipes. I won't say it was great because it was milder than I'd like, but the kids loved it, and I thought it was good... just needed a little more spice. (also.. sorry the pic isn't the best)

Sunday: If you've never made your own pizza dough before, you really should give it a try. It's easier than you'd think.

Monday: Chicken - Marinate in your choice of marinates. Pour everything into a casserole dish and cook (usually at 350) until cooked through and juices run clear. Potatoes - Cut into 1 inch pieces, season with your choice of seasoning, and bake until fork tender. Broccoli & Cauliflower - Steamed fresh or frozen, and seasoned with salt and pepper.

Tuesday: We haven't tried this recipe yet, but when we do I will update and let you know what I think of it.

Wednesday: Pork Chops - seasoned with salt and pepper and broiled. The Mac 'n Cheese and Applesauce are both store bought. This dinner is a nice no brainer, and one of my kids' favorites.

Thursday: My girls think having breakfast for dinner is the best silly fun around. It was always one of my favorite meals as a kid too.

Super Savings Saturday - So~So Week

I'm not completely thrilled with my shopping totals this week. I did have to buy diapers, dog food, and some exotic cooking ingredients which definitely upped the totals, but it's still higher than I would have liked. Oh well, I'm still learning I guess.

I am, however, very happy with my one CVS trip for the week. I didn't earn back as many ECBs as I spent, but that's OK... I still have plenty for future use, and April will be here soon with all new deals.
1st (and only) CVS purchase ~ spent $0.74
Coupons used:
-10.00 (10/50 CVS coupon, received for buying a prescription)
- 5.00 (5/15 CVS coupon)
- 6.00 (3 - $2 coupons for the Oust candle holders)
- 8.97 (3 coupons for free candle refills w/purchase of the holder, $2.99/ea.)
-24.00 in ECBs

Subtotal = $0.34
Tax = $0.40

I paid $0.74 out of pocket, and earned back $14.00 in ECBs. Also, according to the receipt, I saved a total of $71.21 when you include the sales. I don't think you can even buy one can of Pepsi for $0.74 in very many places these days, let alone get money back for buying it! You just gotta love CVS!

I'm wondering if my poor performance this week has anything to do with it being the last full week of the month. It seems like the sales sort of dwindle at the end of the month. How'd you do? Find any great deals? Or, was your end of the month like mine... not so hot?

Go to Money Saving Mom's site to check out other people's great deals.

Tasty Thursday - Greek Orzo Salad

This is my first time participating in The Pumpkin Patch's Tasty Thursday, but I hope to be back often.

This week's theme is Springy Recipes, which makes me think of things that would be good to eat in cold or hot weather. This recipe fits the bill perfectly because it can be served hot, cold, or even warm! :)

The base of this salad I got from Rachel Ray. Actually, I swear I learned this whole recipe on her food network show years ago, but I can't find the recipe on their site. Also, like Rachel Ray, I never measure things out, so these measurements are approximations. Which means you can change it up to suit your tastes.

Click on the Recipe to see it larger, or to print a 3x5 recipe card.

I do Weight Watchers, so I figured out the WW points value for this recipe: Each serving is 6 points if you use 3oz of feta, 6oz of genoa salami, 15 kalamata olives, and divide the recipe in to 8 servings. If you leave out the salami it would be 4 points per serving.

Enjoy!

WFMW - Keeping Your Zipper Up

OK, I'm probably going to completely embarrass myself with this post, but as I've said before... at least I'm able to laugh at myself!

I have the unfortunate problem of owning pants with zippers that won't stay up. I don't know why this happens, but it happens to me a lot. My pants all fit properly, but if I bend over, or sit down... down goes the zipper. It drives me nuts! And, gives me a complex. I wonder.. does my stomach stick out in some weird way that my zippers just can't handle?! If so, I guess that's just one more reason to keep up with my diet.

Anyway, after years of suffering from XYZ syndrome, I've finally come up with a solution... tiny flat elastic hair bands. I just hook them around a hole in the zipper pull like this:
The other hole closer to the zipper works as well, and may be necessary because some pants don't have a hole on the end of the zipper pull like these do.

Then when the zipper is all the way up I hook the rest of the elastic around the button like this:
Once I button my pants closed you can't even see the elastic.
The cheap elastics that don't stretch much seem to work the best, and last longer. I've had this one (actually it's two together) on this pair of jeans for about a year. I even wash them with it on. If the elastic does stretch out on you, or fall off in the wash, don't worry they're cheap and can easily be replaced.

A word of caution.. it does take slightly longer to undo your pants, so don't wait till the last minute when you have to "go."

Please be honest with me... have I made a complete fool of myself sharing this little secret with you all? :) I guess it's OK if I have. At least I'm no longer showing my underwear to the world!

This works for me! Check out other great tips at this week's edition of Works For Me Wednesday.

Tackle it Tuesday - Bathroom Closet

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Right now my house is in complete and utter chaos. This is due to...

1. We are rearranging a couple of rooms, and getting ready to put in new carpet, so as stuff is getting moved around it ends up stacked throughout the house in piles.

2. My husband and I are getting things together for a garage sale and ebay... this has the same effect as number one.

3. Our lives are just plain BUSY, so finding time to straighten up and organize the clutter is difficult.

So, today I tackled one small corner of our house... the bathroom closet.

Before...
Emptied...
Clutter that was removed...
Things to get rid of (Goodwill and trash)...
Our nice "NEW" closet!
From a distance it still looks cluttered, but I can assure you that it is all nicely organized and I can now see everything easily. This may be a small accomplishment, but it feels GREAT!

I'm hoping Tackle it Tuesday will help keep me motivated to tackle other corners of my home!

Give Me Five - Easter 2008 Memories

My oldest is in the first grade, and her school district's spring break goes Thursday through Monday, instead of getting a whole school week off. I really don't like the way they do this, because it seriously shortens their vacation. But, in spite of this we were still able to get out of town and visit family. We just didn't get to stay as long as we would have liked. We went to my in-law's house for the Holiday, and had a great time. Here are five of my favorite memories...

1. Happy Easter Jesus. My oldest was the first to wake up, and I wouldn't let her see what the bunny had left for her until all three of her sisters were awake. While we were waiting for them, she and I started talking about the true meaning of Easter, and she prayed to Jesus thanking him for all he has done. At the end she said,"And Jesus, I hope you have a very nice Easter. Amen." I just thought that was sweet, and it really put a smile on my face.

2. Candy Crazy. All my two year old cared about ALL day was candy. We constantly found her hiding behind furniture eating candy that she had somehow managed to either hide from us, or steal from one of the older kids' baskets. I don't know how much she ate, but it was WAY more than she should have!

3. Thoughtfulness. We had BBQ'd hamburgers and hotdogs for lunch, and my Mother-in-law made baked beans, green beans, and potato salad for the sides. I guess some time in our relationship I had mentioned that I am picky about potato salad, and so she asked me what I put in mine. Then, she made hers exactly the same way, in spite of the fact that it was different than what she was used to. I thought that was very kind of her, and it tasted fantastic! Everything did.

4. A little time alone. We don't live close to any of our extended family (the closest is about seven hours away) so it's always nice when we get to visit with them and can get caught up on everything. It's also nice because they take the kids off of our hands a little bit, and leave us free to relax for a change. I spent a lot of time reworking the look of my blog this weekend. Which is something I wouldn't have been able to do with out the extra help.

5. Dinner out with my hubby. Because we have four kids we really can't afford a babysitter, so pretty much the only time we get to go out is while we are visiting family. Easter night my hubby and I went out to dinner, and it was really nice to get a chance to reconnect a little without the kids around. Plus, we went to a movie on Saturday night... two date nights in a row was really a treat. Thanks Nana and Papa!

New Colors

For those of you that have been here before (and newcomers too)...

What do you think of my new colors? Yay or nay? I haven't completely decided myself, but I was just getting tired of the purple hearts.

Writing this just now is the first time I realized I had purple hearts on my blog... you know like the military metals. Those metals are given for getting injured in combat. I guess motherhood can be like combat at times, and some days I do feel like I'm injured, or at least exhausted. :)

Anyway, I was tired of the hearts, and wanted something a little less busy. So, I'm trying this for now.

Super Savings Saturday - Just a Couple of Things

I didn't go grocery shopping last week, because we are away from home visiting family. But, before we left I scored the following bargains at GIANT and CVS.
All of this was only $8.00 at GIANT
Actually, all of the Betty Crocker Stuff was FREE, and all I paid for were the Toll House chips which were 2/$4 after coupons. All of the Betty Crocker was on sale 5/$5 - must buy 5 - limit 5. So, I did two transactions, used $0.50 Manufacturer's Coupons for each item, and Giant doubled each coupon... which made it FREE! I love that word!

Here's what I got at CVS...
1st thru 3rd transactions - $5.61
4th and 5th transactions - $2.86
I'll be set for deodorant for quite some time! :)

So, I spent a total of $8.47 out of pocket at CVS, and bought $164.56 worth of products. Also, I started this month with $10 in ECBs, and I now have $42 in ECBs. My hubby just says, "Good job honey," when I show him my numbers... he's really not that interested, but he does like that I save us money. :)

Our Two Year Old Co-Pilot

Yesterday while returning home from a family outing my hubby and our two year old had the following exchange...

2:
I no wanna go home!
H:
Baby, we have to go home. It's late.
2:
NO!
H:
Well then, where are we going to go?
2:
Dis-a-way! (points chubby finger in the direction we are already going)

Today on the way to Nana and Papa's house (trip is over 6 hours long) they had this exchange as we got off the highway at the last exit..

2:
I wanna go Nana's house!
H:
Sorry baby, we had to turn around and go home. (he just loves to tease)
2:
GO BACK! (again points chubby finger, but this time at her Daddy in a very demanding way)

The girl definitely knows where she wants to go, and if we're not going the right way she sure lets us know!

WFMW - Cheap Fabric

If you love to sew, but hate paying a lot for fabric than this post is for you.

It's not mind boggling really.. my secret to cheap fabric is the Thrift Store. Sometimes I find actual pieces of fabric, but more often I find things to re-purpose; drapes, sheets, dresses, and shirts all work great. Here are a couple of examples:

I made this from a tablecloth. This purse used to be a funky old dress.Bedsheets are great for summer dresses.Actually, bedsheets are one of my favorite finds. Usually they are very cheap, you get tons of fabric from them, and there are so many things you can make from them. I use children's sheets with cartoon characters for kids clothes, or I cut out the cartoon characters to use as appliqués on other things.

Of course you need to look for items that don't have too much wear, stains, or tears. However, if it's a large enough item a small stain or tear shouldn't matter. You just have to be sure to cut your project around that part.

However, BEWARE.. finding great fabric at low prices can be addicting. You could end up like me and have a mountain of fabric that needs to be made into something. And trust me, your husband will not like it when he has to move all of that fabric to the garage so that the new carpet can be installed.

Super Savings Saturday - Doing Good

First, a piece of business... I'm not going to title these posts Friday Food Funds anymore, for two reasons: 1. I write about more than just food, and 2. Since I always link these posts to Money Saving Mom's Super Savings Saturday, I decided I'd just keep things simple and call mine the same.

Anyway, here are my totals for this week.

Cool Tip for WEIS shoppers.. They have Kraft 16oz salad dressings on sale for 3/$5. I bought six and used three $1/2 coupons that I think were in last week's papers, and got them for 6/$7. Then when I checked out I was completely surprised by a coupon for $3 off my next purchase (can be used on anything). The coupon was due to the dressings and said this: buy 3 get $1, buy 4 get $2, buy 5+ get $3. So, really I got 6/$4. I still have more of these manufacturer's coupons, so I think I'll go get more. And, if I use this new coupon I'll get 6 more for $4, and hopefully another $3 off coupon back. I'm just not sure if it will print again, but if not in the end I will have 12 bottles of salad dressing for $11 out of pocket. Not bad, especially because we use these to marinate meat, and go through them fast.
** I went back tonight and bought six more of these, and the $3 coupon printed out again! So, I got 12 salad dressings for $11, and have $3 to use towards my next trip. BTW, these dressings are normally $2.99/ea in my area.
If you're buying these with the $1/2 coupon that was in last week's papers than the best way to do it is to buy 6 at a time. The coupon will only print out once for any amount over 5, so if you have a lot of the MC's like I did than doing multiple transactions will get you the most money back.**

Also, they have the Hillshire Farm Hearty Slices Deli meat on sale for 2/$5, I had a $1/2 coupon and got them for 2/$4. The cool thing was that they had a coupon hanging next to the meat for buy 2 get a free loaf of Sara Lee bread. So, be sure to check your store and see if they have the same. I only grabbed one, but if I go back for more dressing I think I'll grab more.

Both of these sales just started yesterday, so they'll be good all week!

At GIANT I found a Jell-O endcap display that had a free coupon/recipe book tear-off. Also, you could get a free Jigglers Egg mold if you bought the right number of Jell-Os. I think it was 3 large or 6 small. And, these are on sale this week (I think).

Finally, a couple of pics showing my great buys at CVS. Have I mentioned yet how much I LOVE that place? I had to use a ton of coupons and lots of ECBs to get these deals, but it was worth it because I finally bought things we needed, and not just things to increase my ECB supply.

1st - 4th CVS purchases - $4.07 out of pocket!
5th and 6th CVS purchases - $2.94 out of pocket!
How'd you do this week? Find any other great deals at the same stores I go to? If so, I'd love to hear about them.

Check out other great shopping finds at Money Saving Mom.

Welcome to the Party! I'm giving something away!

The Contest has ended. I will post the winner later today. THANKS to everyone who stopped by!

This is a sticky post and will be on top until March 14th.
Blog Party 2008

Hello everyone, and thanks for stopping by. I don't have a lot planned for this party (probably just this post) but I am looking forward to meeting everyone who stops by my blog, and I'm excited to stop by other blogs as well.

First, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Amy, I'm thirty years old, and I've been blogging since the end of last year. I started off with a private family blog, because all of our family and friends live far away, and it was a great way for me to keep them up to date on our lives. I quickly became addicted and now have this blog plus two others... Silver Skies my photo blog, and Momma's Lost It my diet blog.

I'm married to the greatest guy on earth, and I thank God for him every day. He just recently returned home after working overseas for the last fourteen months, and it's wonderful having him back, but an adjustment as well. We have four little girls ages almost seven, five, two and a half, and one. They keep us running from sun up to sun down, but we wouldn't change a second.

When I'm not busy with the kids, or blogging, I have a number of other hobbies that I enjoy.

Sewing - I've been sewing for as long as I can remember. When I was little I would visit my grandma in the summer, and she and I would make clothes for my Cabbage Patch dolls. These days I mostly like to make bags, and clothes for my girls.

Knitting - I taught myself to knit about two years ago, and I LOVE it! Unfortunately, I haven't had time to do it at all this year. I have tons of yarn stashed, and lots of projects planned, so hopefully I'll find some time for this soon.

Baking Bread - My grandma taught me to bake bread last summer, and I haven't stopped since. You can find the recipe she taught me with here, and some alterations I made here. If you get a chance you've GOT to try it... it's the best bread EVER!

Photography - I've been obsessed with pictures since I was a toddler, and have been told that I would sit for hours and look at books and photo albums. Sadly, I've never taken a photography class, but that doesn't mean I never will. In the mean time I just keep snapping pictures.

One final interesting thing about me... I LOVE tattoos. My hubby has lots of them, and I have a few but hope to get more. My family thinks I'm crazy, but they still love me, and just shake their heads in bafflement when I tell them how pretty tattoos are. :) Here's a picture of the one on my bicep. It goes all the way around.
So, that's me in a nutshell. Just your average sewing, knitting, bread baking, tattooed Momma of four. Now on to what you're really interested in.. my giveaway. :)

Last January I gave this bag away during the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival, and here it is in it's new home with Wendy. Be sure to stop by her Blog Party Post too, she's giving something away as well.

Anyway, this time I'm giving away a sweet little polka dot bag that's perfect for spring. It has acrylic handles and sits up on it's own once your stuff is inside. The outside is made from recycled fabric.
The inside is made from two contrasting polka dotted fabrics, and has two small pockets.
After my last giveaway many people asked me if I sell my bags. Well, the answer is, no for now. But, I plan to open an Etsy store in the very near future, and I'll post an announcement here once my store is open. So, if you want to be the first to know either bookmark me, or subscribe to my feed.

Oh, and to enter my giveaway just leave me a comment. You can say hello, tell me your favorite hobby, or anything else you feel like. Just be sure to leave me a way to contact you.. email, link to blog, etc. This giveaway is open to all... bloggers, non-bloggers, US, and international. I'll pick and contact the winner on the 15th. Good luck!

Also, if you have suggestions for the name of my Etsy store I'd love to hear them. I'm stumped right now.

Thanks again for stopping by, and I hope you all have a great party week!

WFMW - Coupon Organization

I recently became a Coupon Clipper, and to say I'm obsessed with this money saving hobby would be putting it lightly. In the last three weeks I've saved $118.83 by using Manufacturer's Coupons. When I combined those coupons with store coupons and sales I saved a total of $550.78. I LOVE my coupons, but keeping them in order, and finding the ones I need is a BIG job. At least it was a big job until last weekend when I came up with a new system.

I bought a bunch of baseball card protector pages(@ Walmart - 70pages/$9.97), put all my coupons in their own little pockets, and now I can see everything at a glance. I use dividers to separate each section, and can easily flip to whatever I'm looking for. It took forever to get everything in at first, but now it will be easy to add to it each week.
I keep the pages in a nice zippered binder that has a big pocket in the front where I put all of my weekly adds. In the pencil pouch I've got scissors, pens, and anything else I might need. It's nice having everything together in one place, and I can take the whole thing with me when I go shopping. But, if I want to take something smaller instead, I bring one of these..
Inside I have envelopes for each store I shop at. By planning my shopping ahead of time I am able to select the coupons I'll need, and separate them into the envelopes. I also keep any store coupons or flyers I might need in here.
So, that's it. If you're into coupons I hope this helps you. And, if you have any couponing tips or tricks I'd love to hear them.

Also, don't forget to stop by Rocks In My Dryer for other Works For Me Wednesday ideas.

By the way, I'm doing a giveaway this week for the Ultimate Blog Party. You can check it out here.

Snip, Snip!

I had decided to write about getting my haircut for Tackle it Tuesday, even before I saw that 5 Minutes for Mom's entry was about haircuts too. So, I guess great minds think alike.

Anyway, my hair has been short (sometimes less than an inch long) for the last 10 years. While pregnant with my last little one I decided to grow it out, and after about a year and a half this was the result...My hair is really thick, and naturally wavy, so I'm blessed that it looks fairly nice without much work. Usually, I don't even blow dry it. I do like the way it looks long, but it drives me crazy! I hate the feel of it on my neck. I hate finding long hairs every where. I hate when the wind blows it in my eyes. And, I hate the headaches I get from wearing it up. So, in spite of all the work to grow it out, it wasn't a very hard decision for me to get it cut last Sunday, and here's the result...For me this is SO much better. I think I've finally come to the realization that I'm just not meant to have long hair ever again. And, the next time I think about growing it out I need to come back and read this post again.

Check out other projects people are tackling at 5 Minutes for Mom.

Friday Food Funds - It was a GOOD week!

YAY! I finally reached my goal of saving over 50% on my grocery shopping. This was of course thanks to CVS, and I'll write more on that in a sec. Now that I've reached my discount goal I have a new goal for us. I want to try and spend only $60 a week on groceries. This will include all household items and diapers. This budget is going to be extremely difficult for us since we have four little kids, two of which drink milk constantly. We spend between $20 and $30 a week on milk alone. The amount changes depending on whether or not it's on sale.. boy do I wish I could get coupons for milk! Anyway, I obviously didn't reach this goal this week, but that's OK. I'm hoping the better I get at shopping at CVS the closer I will get to $60 a week.

Speaking of CVS, I LOVE THEM! This is only my second week doing the CVS deals, and I am hooked! I started this week with $10 in ECBs, and I ended it with $33.96 in ECBs. Plus, I bought the following items for a grand total of $7.54 out of pocket, and according to the receipts, I saved $147.79 for the week. I used $47.70 in manufacturer's coupons, and the rest of the savings was from sales, CVS coupons, ECBs, and rainchecks from last month's ECB deals. I bought things with the main purpose of building my ECB supply. So, we didn't really need everything we bought, but we will use it all... eventually.

First Transaction - Spent $0.60
Second Transaction - Spent $0.29
Third Transaction - Spent $0.80Fourth Transaction - Spent $3.97Fifth Transaction - Spent $0.43
6th Transaction - Spent $1.45
Like I said, it was a good week! How did you do? Find any great deals? Check out the great savings others found here.

WFMW Backwards Edition - Potty Training?

Backwards Edition!

For those that don't know me, I have four little girls whose ages are almost seven, five, two and a half, and one. My husband and I are in the process of contemplating potting training our two year old. Since I have two older girls you are probably wondering why in the world I would need help in this area... I've obviously survived it twice, right?

Well, the thing is, my oldest girls potty trained themselves. Honest. I know it sounds too good to be true, but that is exactly what happened. My husband and I were both in the military at the time, and they attended day care. Their teachers worked with them on it a little bit, but really we all just waited until they were ready. And, once they were ready they had it mastered in about five days. My oldest even got up at night to go potty after only being trained for three days. However, they were both over three years old (pushing three and a half) when this miracle occurred.

Anyway, my two year old's class at preschool is a non-diaper room. Which means she's been wearing pull ups and using the potty there, but really she just goes in the pull up and they change her. She's just not interested in using the toilet. Actually, that's not entirely true. She loves sitting there, but using it is the tricky part. The problem is, this is her last week at preschool, and I'm not sure if I have the patience to continue the training they've started.

Part of me says why bother, once she's ready she'll just do it. After all that's what her sisters did. But, I think the main reason they did is because of the environment they were in... all of their friends were using the potty so they wanted to as well. Since my two year old won't have this type of peer pressure (geesh, peer pressure at two?) what can I do to motivate her in the right direction?
